About Fred Meyer Stores
Originally founded in 1922, Fred Meyer was started by Frederick Grubmeyer, a German immigrant and native of New York. Meyer started the first Fred Meyer store in Portland, Oregon using what was an innovative marketing concept at the time – one stop shopping. During the 1930s, consumers would typically go to different stores for different goods – getting their meat at one store, their cheese at another and so on. Meyer centralized all of these under one roof and put an expert in charge of each department. The idea worked, and Fred Meyer stores grew substantially by Meyer’s death in 1978. The grocery chain was acquired by the Kroger corporation in 1999 and is now part of the Kroger family of brands (1,2,3).

Fred Meyer Saving Guidelines
Fred Meyer is significantly less expensive than alternatives such as Safeway or Whole Foods. There are, however, significant ways to save beyond their low baseline prices.
1. Sign Up For Their Rewards System.
Getting into Fred Meyer’s rewards system sets you up for automatic delivery of their coupons. What happens is Fred Meyer has a marketing system set up where they track your spending and then send you coupons for things that you frequently purchase, along with coupons for items they want to sell more of. Fred Meyer has two ways they’ll send you coupons. First, they’ll send you coupons in an envelope. Second, they may send you a recipe book loaded with coupons…for the items the recipe book recommends.
Here is what they look like:
And here is another example:
Using Fred Meyer coupons won’t make you an overnight millionaire, but it will consistently save you money if you plan ahead.
Sign up at the customer service desk.
Don’t forget – Fred Meyer coupons can be applied after you buy, so if you buy something, but forgot the coupon, you can talk to the customer service desk and apply the coupon retroactively. The coupon and the receipt must both be current and the coupon has to still be valid.
2. Use Receipt Scanning Apps After You’re Done Shopping
One really solid way to save money at Fred Meyer is to load up on all the receipt scanning apps you can.
Get the following and get them set up on your smartphone:
1. Fetch
2. Ibotta
There are others, but you want these two at a minimum because they pay and they are integrated with Fred Meyer’s marketing. After you take your groceries home, scan your receipts and get points.
Also, you’ll want to check both these apps ahead of time – sometimes you can get items for 100% off. It just depends on which food producer wants to improve their sales and if Fred Meyer has it in stock.
3. Be Respectful And Polite To Fred Meyer Staff.
Fred Meyer staff have a number of unpleasant tasks to deal with. Their wages are typically low, they often have to deal with thieves, angry customers, insensitive management and crazy people in their stores. In some locations Fred Meyer stores are chronically understaffed. What this means is that if you show up with a poor attitude or treat the staff badly they are less likely to cooperate with you. This can cost you discounts, speedy service, or they may refuse you service outright.
4. Negotiate.
Fred Meyer department managers have the power to issue discounts. So, for example if you’re buying high end electronics, always ask for a discount. If you’re respectful about it, you have a positive attitude and a reasonable rationale for why they should discount the item, you might be able to convince the department manager to give you the additional savings.
Specifically, if the product is damaged in any way – for example if the bag is ripped or if the box you’re buying is crushed, ask for a discount. They’ll give it to you.
5. Always Check Your Receipts.
Fred Meyer’s internal computer systems are not always updated, so always check your receipt to be sure it matches the price displayed on the shelves. In addition, the Fred Meyer app is often not intuitive. So, sometimes you can miss deals that you think you’ve qualified for. The only way to determine this is to check your receipt.
6. Hit The Discount Racks.
Every Fred Meyer has at least two discounts racks, sometimes more. There is usually one for the bakery section, and other for non-perishable grocery goods. Typically the bakery discount rack is in the back of the store next to the dairy section. The non-perishable goods discount rack is usually in the middle of the store. The goods on the bakery shelf are typically day old bread, bagels or cakes from the Fred Meyer bakery. Be careful though – the bread in this section can often go moldy fast. Also, even when marked down the bakery discount rack goods may not have the best prices. Look in the regular bakery isle for the lowest cost bread.
The non-perishables rack is frankly a source of some extreme bargains. You can find boxes of oatmeal for 50 cents or cans of Campbells soup for 10 cents. The deals in the non-perishables discount rack are hit or miss, so check it every time.
Sometimes there is a discounted frozen foods section also. You just have ask the Fred Meyer staff where it is.
